Wishram Language Arts
English/Language Arts (ELA)
I grew up down the river in Vancouver, WA where I attended Columbia River High School. I graduated in 2004, and went on to the University of Idaho where I majored in secondary education: English & history teaching. My first teaching job was in a fly-in only Yup’ik Eskimo village on the west coast of Alaska where I taught mostly middle grades. After two years in the bush, I came back to Idaho where I taught high school English and American government and coached volleyball in a rural potato farming community. I met my husband, Mike, during that time, and together we moved to north central Idaho where I taught art and Pacific Northwest history for a year, before Mike was hired as the Superintendent/Principal for Wishram School and we moved to the Gorge. After two years as the Talented and Gifted program coordinator and online teacher for North Wasco School District in The Dalles, I was thrilled to join my husband and become part of the Wishram School family last year. The 2018-2019 school year will be my 9th year in the teaching profession, and I am looking forward to another great year at Wishram School!
Outside of my teaching day, I am also working on obtaining my master’s degree in education with a focus on instructional strategies. My husband and I are Airbnb hosts, and we love introducing people to Goldendale and our favorite spots in the Gorge. I also occasionally pour beer at Dwinell Country Ales, Goldendale’s craft brewery. I love reading, creative writing, listening to music and practicing on my guitar, and my poodle dog, Roman.
About My Classroom:
My focus for this school year is to increase rigor and raise expectations. Wishram students are some of the brightest I have ever had the pleasure to work with, and I am committed to helping them become college & career ready through reading, writing, and speaking. My ELA curriculum is centered around novel studies, where students will be exposed to a variety of different literature genres over the course of the year.
