Mr. Churchwells weekly

From Mr. Churchwell,
Hello Wishram Students, Staff, and Families, Happy Friday to all.
Last Friday, our HS Football team hosted the Waitsburg Cardinals and if you missed that one, you missed a barn burner. We went into overtime with a score of 28 to 28. At the end of double overtime, the score was 36 to 36. After going into triple overtime we ended up losing 44 to 36. It was a great game and our kids have every reason to hold their heads up high. Great job!
September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Better known as Orange Shirt Day-Every Child Matters.
Let's all show support for children and wear our Orange Shirts on Monday.
This is the day we honor the children who never made it back home from residential schools. In the late 1800's and early to late 1900 Indigenous children were taken from their homes and families and placed in residential schools. If the parents did not allow them to go to these residential schools, the parents were put in jail. The children had their Native names taken away and were either given an English name or just a number. Most of these children only knew how to speak their Native Language but were not allowed to speak their language while attending these residential schools. The estimated number of children who never came home from these residential schools sits at 6000, however, this number keeps growing as more Indigenous communities search the grounds of these former residential school sites. In May 2021, in Kamloops, BC, it was announced that 215 unmarked graves with children, as young as three years old were discovered. None of this was acceptable so the least we can do to support these children, families, and communities is to wear an orange shirt on this day.
October is National Disability Employment Month
Did you know that the month of October is National Disability Employment Month? This is the month where we celebrate the contributions, achievements, and potential of people with disabilities in the workplace. My hat goes off to these hard-working individuals who strive to do so much for their families, communities, and even their place of employment. If you think life is rough for you, think of someone who is struggling with a disability, but still makes it happen every day, and then ask yourself, is it really that bad?
We have a lady working here at Wishram School that I would like to take a minute to honor. She is one of the hardest-working, uplifting and sweet-spirited people I know. She never lets her disability get in her way and she makes Wishram School a better place to work. Thank you Ms. Sheila McCullough for being our Kitchen Manager, Cook, Afterschool Program Assistant, and Sign Language teacher. And yes, she forces all of us to attempt to learn basic sign language. You are an amazing inspiration to so many.

We had our weekly Program Committee Meeting and discussed all the normal items. We did spend a little extra time discussing MTSS and our older students. Mr. Cameron and Ms. Carissa will meet on Tuesday to set up a couple meetings to discuss a few students who need a little extra support. We discussed a couple of upcoming field trips. On October 17th, our 4th & 5th grade students will be going to Maryhill Museum. On October 25th our K-5th will be going to the pumpkin patch. Mr. Walters was in contact with Central WA University and is trying to plan a trip for some of our students to visit the College as well as stay the night in the dorms.
JH Volleyball traveled to Bickleton to play the Pirates. They did not pull out a victory but they played a great game.
MS Football traveled to Arlington OR to play Ione/Arlington. They won 7 to 28.

Ms. Hathaway, Mr. Cameron, and I interviewed and hired Mr. Cooper for the ASB advisor position. Mr. Cooper has held the ASB Activities Coordinator position for several years now working closely with the past ASB Advisor so this should be an easy transition for him. Thank you Mr. Cooper for all you do.
On Tuesday evening we held our monthly School Board Meeting. Present were Mr. Clyde Rosa, Board Chairman, Ms. Betsy Barnhart, Legislative Representative, Mr. Jeff Augustus, Board Member., Ms. Sarah Hathaway, Business Manager, Mr. Brent Cameron, Principal and Mr. Tye Churchwell, Superintendent. Mr. Churchweel gave his board report followed by Mr. Cameron. The School Board did discuss increasing our Minimum Fund Balance which is dictated by Board Policy 6022. Mr. Churchwell has asked the board to consider raising the Minimum Fund Balance from $200,000 to $400,000 due to the rise of inflation. Basically this policy dictates a stage where the Board and the Superintendent agree to take drastic measures if our fund balance falls below a certain amount. The current policy set many years back sets the amount at $200,000. Since two board members were absent from the meeting the school board chose to table this topic until the October School Board Meeting. Thank you Board Members for all you do. Just a reminder to our community, being on the Wishram School Board is 100% volunteer and these five board members do a great job.

Our JH Volleyball team had their first home game of the season vs Klickitat. The A team played hard and had a good game. They did not pull off a win, but it was a close game. The B team however did win their match. Great job young ladies.
Our HS VB team hosted Klickwood right after the JH game. In case you didn't know, the reason the HS team is named Klickwood is that it includes girls from both Klickitat and Glenwood, hence the name Klickwood. Our girls won 3 out of 4 and took the victory. Great job Ladies.

Our HS Volleyball team traveled to Horizon Christian for a game time starting at 5:00 pm. Our ladies beat the Horizon Christian Hawks 3 out of 4 sets to pull off the Victory. Great job ladies.
